18th June 2021
Dear Fellow Owners,
When I last wrote to you the Government had just announced their “roadmap” out of lockdown and we were looking forward with some optimism that international travel could resume on 17th May. In the interim, every time I go to put pen to paper the Government advice either here in the UK or in Spain has changed! This has made it very difficult to send out meaningful and up to date information. The latest update from the Prime Minister on Monday announced yet another set-back, with the confirmation that the end to restrictions in England will be delayed by 4 weeks. Whilst this doesn’t have a direct affect on the situation with regards to travel to Lanzarote, it certainly doesn’t help to increase confidence in international travel.
Whilst the Government did announce in early May that international travel would go ahead again from Monday 17 May 2021, closely followed by news that Spain had lifted the restrictions for entry from the UK from the 24th May (which was met with great optimism) it was subject to the “traffic light” system whereby countries were categorised as green, amber and red, with each colour meaning different rules around testing and quarantining. Unfortunately, Spain, including the Canary Islands, was categorised as Amber, requiring additional testing and quarantine for 10 days at home on your return. As I write this situation remains unchanged, but from a personal perspective I remain positive that we will be allowed to travel to Lanzarote without restrictions in the near future.
During this period, we all continued to find ourselves in a state of uncertainty with flights being cancelled and Government restrictions still being in place. This said, Las Calas has remained open for owners and guests who are able and willing to travel. This decision was taken on the basis that the costs incurred by remaining open, albeit with a skeleton staff, were no more than the cost of maintaining the resort, providing additional security and factoring in the additional costs to re-open from a closed position. It also allowed for our owners who are prepared to travel, to occupy their weeks, thus potentially reducing the cost to the Club of any form of proposed concession.
Throughout the pandemic, we have seen travel advice change overnight. As the situation currently stands, travellers from the UK who have been vaccinated can travel to Lanzarote and check in at Las Calas with proof of vaccination status. It is essential that you check what format of proof of vaccination is acceptable and check updated travel advice and restrictions for Spain/ The Canary Islands and your country of origin BEFORE YOU TRAVEL as this continues to be subject to change. It is good to see some owners back at the resort enjoying their holiday, although I appreciate that it is a bitter pill for those of us who are unable to travel due to not being able to quarantine when we return home.
As I have reported in previous updates, the Committee has been dealing with an ever-changing situation with our priority always being to protect the future viability of the Club. We have had numerous discussions over the months on what concessions, if any, can be given to owners who have been unable to travel in 2021, due to travel restrictions being in place. In order to make any decisions the Committee need to have a degree of certainty of when things might start to get back to “normal” and what the projected financial position of the Club will be at the end of the year. I am sure you will understand that with the ongoing uncertainty, we are not in a position to make a decision at this time. I thank-you for your patience and understanding on this.
Whilst the resort has not been able to welcome all owners and guests, we have kept a small team onsite to ensure that the resort remains well maintained and secure. Where appropriate we have completed upgrade projects, which would have caused major disruption to owners if they were undertaken in “normal” times. When you return to Las Calas I am sure you will agree that we have not rested on our laurels but have strived to bring a real positive out of these challenging times and we cannot wait to be welcoming you all back as soon as possible.
With Best Wishes
Chairman, Club las Calas.
