Island impresses with knowledge and understanding
If you’re holidaying in Lanzarote and looking for gluten free options, get ready to be surprised. There is a high level of awareness across the island of coeliac disease and wheat intolerance.
The good news is that much of Spanish food is already naturally gluten free friendly. However, many restaurants in the main resort areas have special menus. And they understand about cross-contamination when preparing and cooking. While for self-caterers, the supermarkets offer a wide selection of products.
Here at Club Las Calas we serve a number of gluten free options on both our Bistro 361 and Skyline menus. We can offer gluten free bread, pizzas and even chocolate fudge cake. There are also some dishes on the menu that can be made gluten free with a few hours’ notice. And we have a gluten free beer too.
“The best option is to contact me in advance or pop in and speak to a member of staff when you arrive,” says Karen Kell, food and beverage supervisor at Club Las Calas. “We understand the importance of providing gluten free options to our owners and guests. The team is more than happy to help.”
The resort’s mini shop also stocks a few gluten free products.
If you’re self-catering at other resorts on the island and want to visit a specialist shop, then Naturalmente on Calle El Rapido in Arrecife is your best choice. As well as offering gluten free food, much of its produce is organic too.
Other specialist shops include:
- Ecotienda Habitat in Arrecife
- Herbarium in Costa Teguise
- Herbolario Jalea Real in Arrecife
- Tienda Verde in Tías
- Kamila Grosmut in Teguise
- Herbolario Ecocentro in Playa Honda
- Herbolario El Alquimista in Arrecife
- Hespérides in Casa Leon, Leon y Castillo in Teguise
Our research has found that HiperDino has a good selection of gluten free products. You will find these supermarkets in most of the resort areas including Puerto del Carmen, Costa Teguise and Playa Blanca.
“When my friend visits from the UK, we head to HiperDino in Tias as she loves the free-from range of products they sell,” adds Karen.
Other gluten-free friendly supermarkets include Eurospar which stocks both Schär and Gullón products as well as soya milk and yoghurts. If these brands are unknown to you, Schär states they are the experts in gluten free food. They have various shops in Lanzarote who stock their range of gluten free bread, pasta, snacks, biscuits, cereals and flour.
Gullón is an established biscuit company and one of the top three in Spain. They have a health and fibre range of biscuits covering gluten, salt and sugar free varieties which are stocked in the local supermarkets.
National supermarket Mercadona also has a wide range of over 850 gluten free products and a wide choice of different milks. Just look for the words “sin gluten” on the packaging and shop in the usual aisles rather than looking for a “free-from” section.
A quick search on TripAdvisor for restaurants in Lanzarote that serve gluten free food returns a healthy list of great places to eat.
Topping the list of gluten free restaurants are:
- La Carmencita del Puerto in Puerto del Carmen
- Habana 6 in Costa Tequise
- Treat Cafe Bar in Playa Blanca
Most reviewers are impressed by the knowledge and understanding of coeliac disease and food intolerance by waiting staff. And the willingness to be flexible with the dishes they produce.
In most of the resort areas, English is widely spoken, but if you do travel further afield, here are some important words you should know just in case.
- Sin – without
- Trigo – wheat
- Gluten – gluten
- Sucre – sugar
- Sal – salt
- Leche – milk
- Soja – soya
- Celiac – celíaca
- Coeliac – celíaco
- Sin productos lácteos por favour – no dairy products please
