Mario shares one of his poems
Today, March 21, 2019 Club Las Calas is celebrating UNESCO World Poetry Day.
Held every year on this day, World Poetry Day celebrates one of humanity’s most treasured forms of expression and identity. Practiced throughout history – in every culture and on every continent – poetry speaks to our common humanity and our shared values, transforming the simplest of poems into a powerful catalyst for dialogue and peace.
UNESCO first adopted 21 March as World Poetry Day during its 30th General Conference in Paris in 1999, with the aim of supporting linguistic diversity through poetic expression and increasing the opportunity for endangered languages to be heard.
World Poetry Day is the occasion to:
- Honour poets
- Revive oral traditions of poetry recitals
- Promote the reading, writing and teaching of poetry
- Foster the convergence between poetry and other arts
- Raise the visibility of poetry in the media.
As poetry continues to bring people together across continents, all are invited to join in.
A flame tree in full bloom
To celebrate this great day, we asked Club Las Calas’ very own poet, in residence Mario Martínez, to share with us one of his poems.
UNDER THE FLAME TREE
If I tell you a thousand times good night,
More than a thousand times,
If that is how the day ends before,
If the stairs are shortened in steps,
And the distance becomes a brief fantasy,
It’s because the hour that blurs my wristwatch becomes long
Who yearns for me,
So that I can see you.
If the night is over and you did not leave your breath on my pillow,
If the window remained closed
And the strength of my early morning was spent,
If it was my invention
The one that was under the shade of the flame tree
And that the red of its flowers were not in bloom
If not the blood of my life,
Arrecife becomes a fairy tale city
And not one of quotes,
And I go back to where I was born to dream a dream
Which I enjoy awake
Be it night or day,
But with open windows, good kisses
Red flowers and no lies.
