The three best excursions on Lanzarote

See the best of Lanzarote with these excursions

Thinking of taking some excursions during your Lanzarote holiday at Club Las Calas and are a little unsure of which ones to choose? We’ve put together this little video which covers the three best excursions on the island to help you.

Most popular excursions are the full day South and North Tours and the Cesar Manrique tour as they show the very different sides of Lanzarote. Guests can see so much of what the island has to offer and its landscape, culture and history in just one day.

All the excursions and day-trips on Lanzarote take place on modern, air-conditioned and comfortable coaches with experienced English-speaking guides. Insurance is included.

The South Tour

The South Tour starts at 9am and takes you to Lanzarote Timanfaya National Park to see the extensive lava fields formed by the 18th century eruptions.

In the heart of Montaña del Fuego you’ll see the geothermal experiments, demonstrating the power of the heat below the surface (610º C at 13m). You’ll see the oven where food is cooked by natural heat. The crater route takes us around the best scenery in the park, showing spectacular lava flows of different textures and colours.

There is an optional twenty-minute Camel ride, around the base of the Fire Mountains, which is great fun for all ages.

At El Golfo you can walk down to “El Charco de los Clicos” (the green lagoon). The bay itself has a stunning cliff edge. It is here where Olivina, the beautiful semi-precious green stone, has been found in the rocks.

A drive along the rugged coastline of Los Hervideros leads us to the salt pans of Janubio. At this ‘scientific place of interest’ you will learn about the importance of the salt extraction in the island’s history.

Lunch, in a picturesque typical village, is followed by a journey through the unusual vineyards of La Geria, with a stop for some wine tasting.

You will be back at your pick-up point around 4.00pm.

Included – Entrance to the:

  • Timanfaya National Park
  • Wine tasting in La Geria

Optional extras:

  • Camel ride
  • Lunch

The North Tour

The North Tour is a complete contrast to the South Tour of Lanzarote. Starting at 9am, you pass through Teguise, the old capital, and arrive at the highest point of the island, Peñas del Chache (671m). From this viewpoint, there is a fabulous view of the northeast coastline and Haria, where you can also enjoy the Valley of the Thousand Palm Trees.

Then there’s a stop at the Mirador del Río, created and built by the famous architect César Manrique. You will be able to admire the beautiful views of the Chinijo Island of La Graciosa, Montaña Clara and Alegranza. A tasty lunch is enjoyed in a small fishing village.

At the Jameos del Agua, the creative genius of Cesar Manrique is everywhere. He has transformed the lava tunnel and the cave into subterranean walkways, an auditorium and a volcanic museum.

Of course, the North Tour ends with a visit to the César Manrique Foundation. Here, you have the opportunity to see how the artist adapted five volcanic bubbles into rooms of his house.

A collection of his paintings and architectural designs are also exhibited .

You will be back at your pick-up point around 5.00pm.

Included – Entrance to the:

  • Jameos del Agua
  • Mirador del Rio

Optional extras:

  • Lunch
  • Entrance to the Cesar Manrique Foundation

The Cesar Manrique Tour

A full day dedicated to the work of the late, great, multi-talented Cesar Manrique, who left his mark all over Lanzarote.

After being collected, the tour begins at the Monument “Al Campesino”, in the centre of the island. Manrique designed it in honour of the farmer´s hard work today and in past centuries.

Haria, in the north, is where Manrique spent the last years of his life. After a stroll around Haria you head north to the Mirador del Rio (480m). This spectacular viewpoint carved into the cliff-edge and recreated by Manrique, was once an old artillery post ‘Bateria del Rio’. From here, we look down onto the Chinijo Islands.

After lunch you have the choice to visit either the Green Caves or Los Jameos del Agua, both part of the seven-kilometre lava tunnel of Monte Corona.

The Green Caves, (Las Cuevas de los Verdes), where people used to hide from pirates and slave hunters, have beautiful lighting designed by Jesus Soto, and of course, the great optical illusion.

The Jameos del Agua, home of the blind albino crab, has subterranean pathways, an auditorium and La Casa de los Volcanes, a scientific centre dedicated to volcanology studies.

One of the highlights of the tour is the Cactus Garden, designed on the site of an old ‘rofero’ with its concentric terraces of cacti from Africa, America and the Canary Islands. It has been the last of the of cultural centres opened by Manrique (1990) .

To round off the day you’ll visit the Cesar Manrique Foundation, where the artist created his living space within five volcanic bubbles originated with the 18th century eruptions. In the foundations is a collection of Manrique’s paintings and architectural designs.

You will be back at your pick-up point around 6pm.

Included – Entrance to the:

  • Jameos del Agua or the Green Caves
  • Mirador del Rio
  • Cactus Garden
  • Cesar Manrique Foundation

Optional extra:

  • Lunch
