Best tapas restaurants in Puerto del Carmen

The taste of tradition - the best tapas today

Going out for tapas is one of the most popular Lanzarote customs and an important part of Spanish culture. These small plates of delicious local food are now so well-liked and widely available there is even a World Tapas Day every June 15 – as well as an annual tapas festival in Puerto del Carmen.

The word tapa means lid and the tradition is thought to date back to a 13th century law requiring taverns to serve food with alcohol. In those days, a tapa was simply a small plate of ham or olives used as a lid to keep insects and dust from a drink.

Today, tapas are small plates of tasty treats meant to whet the appetite before lunch or dinner and shared with others. They can be served hot or cold, with or without bread, and eaten with beer, wine or cider.

Guests at Club Las Calas can find some amazing tapas restaurants just a few minutes from the resort in both the New and Old Town areas of Puerto del Carmen. But what should you choose?

Some of the best tapas dishes available today include:

  • Patatas bravas (v) – bite-sized pieces of deep-fried potato served with a spicy tomato sauce.
  • Classic Iberian ham – freshly cut ham in melt-in-the-mouth slivers and served with bread.
  • Croquettes (v) – deep-fried balls filled with ham and cheese in a béchamel sauce.
  • Cuttlefish – delicious soft fish cut into slices and fried
  • Chorizo – everyone’s favourite spicy Spanish sausage served with bread.
  • Tortilla – thick Spanish omelettes stuffed with potatoes and ham.
  • Montaditos (v) – small toasted sandwiches stuffed with all kinds of meat and vegetarian fillings.
  • Pulpo a la galena – fresh octopus gently softened and served sprinkled with olive oil and paprika.
  • Gambas al ajillo – fresh prawns cooked in garlic and olive oil.
