Plans in Place to Refurbish El Rincon in May 2011

The Committee and Management of Club Las Calas have for some time been seeking a way to give both of our on-site bar/restaurants a major face-lift.  To that end, in June 2010, we formed a ‘Buildings & Works Working Group’ [B&WWG], to investigate, design and cost major refits for both outlets.  Having carefully examined the plans and business case presented by the B&WWG, we have decided to refurbish our continental bistro – El Rincon – in May/June 2011.  Thereafter, we will upgrade our on-site pub – The Welcome Inn –as soon as we have the necessary funding in place, which, on current plans, will be in the first quarter of 2012.  The plans for El Rincon include a larger bar, a dedicated ‘sitting out’ area with sofas and armchairs and a significant increase in indoor seating capacity.  The latter will be achieved by fully enclosing (in aluminium and glass) the entire area covered by the existing canopy and removing most of the front exterior brick wall of the present building.  This will enable the entire seating area to be configured as a single large entity; open at the front in summer, closed in winter.  An equally stunning make-over is planned for The Welcome Inn.

This is a warning for all Club Las Calas Owners and other guests who are in the habit of hiring cars, motorcycles, scooters or cycles whilst on holiday in Lanzarote.  We have just received notification from the Ayuntamiento de Tias (i.e. Tias town council) that, overnight on 19/20 July 2010, the direction of the one-way traffic on La Avenida de las Playas (commonly know as 'The Strip') will be reversed.  At present, the flow is north eastwards (i.e. from the Old Town towards the airport).  From 20 July onwards, the traffic will flow the other way (i.e. south-westwards, from the airport towards the Old Town).

Not unexpectedly, this change will have a knock-on effect, not only on many of the side roads that lead off the strip but also much wider afield.  The traffic direction will be reversed in a number of streets, including Calle Cañada (Calle Cesar Manrique) and Calle Princesa Guayarmina.

The exact timing of the change has yet to be confirmed.  Originally, it was to have taken place at midnight on 19/20 July but it is likely that the roads will now not be opened until 07:30 on 20 July 2010.  However, the picture is further complicated by the fact that La Avenida de las Playas will be closed on Saturday 17 July 2010, for the Lanzarote Gay Pride March, and is likely to remain closed following that event until after the changes in traffic flow have been implemented.

Motorists (and pedestrians) are advised to exercise extreme caution in the period immediately following the change.

Margaret Stenson Re-Joins the Club Las Calas Customer Care Team

Club Las Calas is delighted to announce that Margaret Stenson has re-joined the Customer Care Team on site.

Margaret previously worked at the Resort in 2003 - 2004 and will be familiar to many Owners and other guests.  After leaving Club Las Calas in November 2004, she went to work as a Contracts Administrator for Sunterra, which later became Diamond Resorts International.  In November 2009, Margaret was made redundant, when all the work of the Contracts Department was centralised in the UK but, having taken the opportunity to catch up with some overdue decorating, she is now very excited to be given the opportunity to work at Club Las Calas again, alongside Ann and Julie, and she looks forward to renewing acquaintances with old friend on site.

Club Las Calas Owners' Meetings - 2010

In the past month, Members of Club Las Calas have gathered together in Edinburgh in Scotland, Oslo in Norway and Market Harborough in England, as part of the annual round of Owners' Meetings for 2010.

Over 60 Members were present at the Edinburgh Capital Hotel on Saturday 22 May 2010 for the Scottish Information Meeting, which was led by the Club Chairman, Adam Johnson.  Over 40 Members attended the Norwegian Information Meeting at Handverkeren Conferensesenter in Oslo on Sunday 30 May 2010, for a presentation and discussion led by Committee Member Rainer Karlstad.

Finally, on Sunday 6 June 2010, over 60 Members, family and friends were in attendance at The Three Swans Hotel in Market Harborough for the Club's Annual General Meeing, which was preceded by a most enjoyable luncheon.

It is with great sadness that Club Las Calas must report the untimely death of Allan Hill, long-serving and well-liked barman at El Rincon and friend of many Club Members and other guests at the Resort.  Allan died suddenly last week at home in England, whilst visiting the UK to celebrate his father's birthday.

The Chairman, Committee and Management of Club Las Calas would wish to join his colleagues at El Rincon and all of the other staff at the Resort and at Resort Solutions Limited in extending our sincere condolences to his wife Angie, his family and friends.

 

 

Free Resort-wide Wi-Fi Now Operational at Club Las Calas

Club Las Calas is delighted to announce that Wi-Fi is now available throughout the Resort and - what is more - it is free of charge!   It is ideal for those of you who want to keep in touch with friends and family - to tell them what a wonderful time you are having - or if you need to follow the market or retain a link with the office (yes, even on holiday!) and we mustn't forget the youngsters and their games.  All you need to do is bring your laptop, obtain the current password from Reception and log on.  For security reasons, the password will be changed at least fortnightly.

With the new 18-hole Tias Golf Course now fully open less than a mile from the Resort, Members and other guests will be delighted to hear that our Resort Manager, Rachel, now has five sets of golf clubs, including one left handed set, which may be rented out from Reception at 10 Euros a round.  So, now, you can enjoy your golf in the sun (at special Club Las Calas discounted rates) without having to pay to fly your own clubs out to Lanzarote.

May we offer a big thank you to everyone who has kindly donated a set.  However, if there is anyone out there with a lady's set that they would be willing to donate, please let Rachel know and we will reimburse the cost of flying the golf clubs to Lanzarote.

First Choice Airways & Thomsonfly Join Forces as Thomson Airways

As visitors to Club Las Calas may already know, two major providers of flights to and from Lanzarote - First Choice Airways and Thomsonfly - have recently joined forces.  Henceforward, the combined operation - known as Thomson Airways - should be able to offer more choice, more destinations, more regular flights and more UK departure airports.  Indeed, this amalgamation now makes Thomson Airways the biggest UK tour operator at most UK regional airports.  Importantly, all Thomson Airways one way and return flights will be ATOL protected.

Preceeded by a well-attended buffet luncheon, the 2009 Club Las Calas Annual General Meeting was held at The Three Swans Hotel, Market Harborough on Sunday 7 June 2009.  There were 83 Club Members in attendance.

A video of the Meeting will be available on the Members' Pages of the website shortly and full details of the Meeting will be provided in the AGM Minutes, which will be circulated to all Members in due course.  However, in the interim, the results of the voting on the three Resolutions put forward at the AGM are available on the Members' News page in the Members' Section of the website.

Infrastructure Developments in Puerto Del Carmen

Those of us who are regular visitors to Club Las Calas will be aware that the Tias Ayuntamiento (the District Council) has recently begun a major series of public works to upgrade the Avenida Las Playas in Puerto Del Carmen (a.k.a. 'The Strip').  This programme embraces improvements to drainage, changes to vehicular access and the creation of pedestrian areas and traffic-free zones.  It also includes the imposition of new standards for the external appearance of shops and businesses, designed to improve the overall ambiance of the area.  These developments are in parallel to improvements in the road infrastucture around Puerto Del Carmen, which will see the existing circunvalacion (the ring-road) replaced by a new dual carriageway.

As an introduction to these significant developments, the Ayuntamiento has produced a short video, entitled 'The Way Ahead' (Rumbo al Futuro).  The commentary is in Spanish but the excellent photography and graphics are self-explanatory and the video gives a real flavour of the proposed improvements.

We have good news for all golfers looking for the chance to play in the Lanzarote sunshine!  A new 18 hole golf course - Lanzarote's second - has opened within half a mile (1 km) of Club Las Calas and, even better, the new course is offering Club Las Calas guests a 20% discount on green fees.

Successful 2008 Club Las Calas AGM

A very successful Club Las Calas Annual General Meeting took place at The Three Swans Hotel, Market Harborough, on Sunday, 1 June 2008, with Owners representing over 600 Weeks either attending in person or voting by post or proxy.  The Club's Audited 2007 Accounts were approved unanimously, as was the re-election to the Committee of Graham Findlay, to serve a further term of five years.

Next year's AGM will take place at The Three Swans Hotel, Market Harborough, on Sunday, 7 June 2009.  Following a straw poll of the Owners at this year's Meeting, it has also been decided that the 2009 Meeting will be preceded by a buffet luncheon for all those Members and their families who wish to attend.  The cost will be approximately £10 per head.  Further details will be promulgated in due course.

One further decision announced at this year's AGM is that a Club Las Calas Scottish Information Meeting will be held in 2009.  Further details will be promulgated with the Minutes of the 2008 Annual General Meeting.

 

Improved Half-Board Deal Available at Club Las Calas

For a modest charge, the Half-Board package at Club Las Calas offers guests breakfast and dinner at either of the restaurants on site for the duration of their stay.  Ever since it was introduced, has been very popular but now, responding to guests' comments, it has been made even better and includes tea or coffee (for adults) as part of the breakfast meal.

The cost for adults is only €75 per person per week, while children are charged just €45 per person per week.

Club Las Calas Becomes RCI Points® Affiliate

Friday 27 July 2007 will be a "red letter" day for Club Las Calas, when the sale of RCI Points® begins on site (and through our UK-based Management Company, Resort Solutions).  Members and other guests attracted by the flexibility and transparency of the RCI Points® product will be able to cede Weeks into RCI Points® and also to purchase "Pure Points®.   To help kick off the new facility, a one-off special promotion will be offered to Club Members for the month of August 2007 only.  Under this "Home Resort Conversion" offer, existing Club Las Calas Owners, who do not yet own any RCI Points®, will be able to become RCI Points® Members for a special one-off fee of only £282 (including VAT), which includes one year's membership of RCI.

The week commencing Thursday 26 July 2007 will see Club Las Calas celebrating in style the 21st Anniversary of the Club's foundation in 1986.  Events will include Flamenco dancers, a Cheese & Wine Reception, a Children's Party - with bouncy castle - and a range of themed competitions throughout the week.  The focus will be on fun for all the family, especially the youngsters on site. The week will also see the launch of Club Las Calas as a new RCI Points® Partner [see above]. Further information on individual events will be published on site at the Resort.

New Regulations from 13 June 2007 for Air Travellers to Spain & the Canaries

On 13 June 2007, Spain will introduce new security requirements under the Advance Passenger Information (API) regulations.  All airlines will be required to provide the following specific information about every passenger travelling to Spain and/or the Canary Islands:

  • Full Name;
    Nationality;
    Date of Birth;
  • Passport Number.

Spain is the first country in the European Union to implement the API regime but other countries are expected to follow suit in the near future. Each airline is responsible for collecting the information about its own passengers and may do so through their websites, call centres, travel agents or at check-in.  Club Las Calas Members flying to Lanzarote are advised that, unless they are certain that they have provided all of the above information to their airline before setting off for the airport, they should allow extra time for checking-in at departure.

 News for Club Las Calas Owners with Weeks on the Resale List

This article has been posted to clarify the current position, in answer to a number of recent questions from our Norwegian Members. Firstly, Owners with Weeks for sale via the Club's Resale Programme may indeed offer the same Weeks for rent, whilst remaining on the Resale List.  The way to do this is to tick the box on the Resale Authorisation Form, which they sign when first putting their Weeks up for sale.  This will advise Resort Solutions that the relevant Week is to be offered for rent until such time as it is sold and Resort Solutions will contact the Owner if the Week is rented out.  An Owner who wishes to rent out such Weeks, but who did not tick this box, should get in touch with Resort Solutions by telephone on +44 (0)1858 431160 or by e-mail to admin@resort-solutions.co.uk Whilst a Week remains on the Resale List and available for rental through Resort Solutions, an Owner may offer such a Week to friends and family or for rental through other agencies.  However, in order to avoid "double-booking", the Owner must contact Resort Solutions before so-doing. 

Secondly, providing they advise Resort Solutions beforehand, Owners with Weeks on the Resale List may bank such Weeks with RCI (or Dial-an-Exchange).  However, Owners must recognise that this may affect their chances of a sale, since this will impact occupancy rights for the year in which the Week is banked (i.e. a potential purchaser could not occupy the Apartment in that Week if it is already committed to the exchange organisation).  If in doubt, please contact Resort Solutions [details as above].

El Rincon at Club Las Calas Offers New Wi-Fi Facility

[Posted: 5 January 2007]As part of the constant upgrading of facilities for guests at Club Las Calas, wireless internet connection (Wi-Fi) is now available at El Rincon, the continental bistro/bar in the Las Calas 3 area of the Resort.  Use your laptop or PDA to stay in touch with friends and colleagues, as you drink your morning coffee, or while you sit in the evening sun, sipping a cool glass of sangria.  The system is secure and password-protected.  Modestly-priced Wi-Fi connection cards may be purchased from the Leisure Centre.

Take Advantage of Lower Term-Time Air Fares - Club Las Calas Offers On-Site Education Programme for Owners' Children

Many Members are suffering as a result of the UK Government’s hard line on unauthorised absence from school.  Put a different way, Members are unable to make use of cheaper term-time flights to take their children to Lanzarote.  This also causes peaks and troughs in demand at the Resort, which, in turn, creates challenges for our on-site team. Recognising this problem, the Committee and Management of Club Las Calas have combined, with advice from the education sector, to devise an “Education Programme” to address it.  We hope that our Programme will make it easier for schools to grant authorised leave of absence to pupils, on condition that the latter undertake learning tasks while enjoying normal holiday activities.  The kids should not worry, though; there are no classrooms involved! This programme is currently available to Club Las Calas Members only.  Those wishing to participate in this scheme (and thus hopefully avail themselves of lower-priced, term-time flights), should ask for a set of explanatory papers from our Management Company, Resort Solutions at Market Harborough, on +44 (0)1858 431160.  Alternatively, if you are on site, obtain the necessary papers from Rachel, our Resort Manager – ready for your next holiday.  Thereafter, having decided which of the curriculum subject areas would most benefit your child, the next step is to discuss with the school concerned this opportunity for learning by experience – probably by speaking to the Head of Year or Year Manager.  When doing so, please ensure that you get the appropriate signatures on the paperwork and then confirm your booking with Resort Solutions, letting them know that you are intending to participate in the Education Programme. Within 24 hours of arrival at Las Calas, you must present at the Leisure Centre a copy of the completed agreement with your child’s school.  Please note that, at this point, you will be asked to pay a small charge to cover the cost of materials.  The charge is 20 Euros per child under 10 years of age and 30 Euros per child for those aged 10 and over. At the end of your stay, providing that the agreed objectives have been met, each child will receive a Certificate of Achievement to take back to school. All that remains is to enjoy your holiday and to tell your friends about the extra benefits obtainable when you are Members of Club Las Calas.

Apartment Refresh Programme 2007/2008 - Winning Contractor(s) Selected:

Club Las Calas is delighted to announce that Brita Multinteriores sl has been selected to undertake the Apartment Refresh Programme, which will commence in September 2007.  The furnishings and decor will be largely as were displayed in Show Apartment 256 (See below), although there will be some minor changes, as suggested by Owners, including the provision of additional drawer space in the lounge.  The Club's Committee and Management have also agreed that the sofa bed offered by Manudecor was preferred to the one which was originally in Brita Multinteriores' design.  Manudecor will therefore supply these items, to Brita's colour and fabric specifications.

Further details of the implementation schedule will be published in due course but, in the meantime, we look forward to working with Brita Multinteriores and Manudecor on this next step in upgrading the facilities at our Resort.

 Great News for Norwegian Owners and other Norwegian Guests at Club Las Calas

Research by Club Las Calas Committee Member Rainer Karlstad has shown that our Norwegian guests will struggle to find Thursday flights to Lanzarote this winter.  Of the four major Norwegian operators, he has only been able to identify two who offer ANY winter flights from Norway to Lanzarote.  Of these, one offers Monday flights and the other offers flights on Mondays and Fridays, with all three of the flights departing from Oslo Airport (Gardermoen).  In addition, one of the operators offers a Friday flight from Torp Airport.

Nevertheless, perhaps we have the answer!  Try flying via the UK and then onwards to Lanzarote.  Flight times are not too extended and prices can be found from as little as NOK 2,400 for the round trip: Norway-UK-Lanzarote-UK-Norway.  Great deals from Ryanair, British Airways and other airlines can be found on the Internet or through your local travel agent, with routeing available from Oslo via Manchester, London Heathrow, Gatwick or Stansted.

If you are a Floating Time Owner, wishing to bank time with RCI or Dial-an-Exchange, in order to make an exchange, Resort Solutions will be happy to help you.  All you need to do is to advise the Reservations Team at Resort Solutions of your intention to bank your Ownership Week(s).

Visit of the Isle of Wight Youth Stage Band to Club Las Calas

We are delighted to announce that the Isle of Wight Youth Stage Band will be visiting Lanzarote in Week 42 this year (19 – 26 October 2006) and will be staying on site at the Resort. As well as playing a number of engagements elsewhere on the Island, these talented young musicians will be bringing their own brand of big band jazz to Club Las Calas with a fabulous last night concert in Las Calas 3 on Wednesday 25th October.

Closure of Apartments 256 and 257

In preparation for the Apartment Refresh Programme, due to commence in 2007, we are preparing two show apartments. This means that in the run up to their unveiling and whilst they are on show to the Membership, the Owners of these apartments will not be able to use them.

However, Resort Solutions and Mario and his Team on site will do everything they can to offer accommodation of the same standard elsewhere at the Resort.

The apartments will be available for guests to view during Weeks 41 – 44 (16 October – 8 November 2006).

Pay your Maintenance Fees by Direct Debit

Responding to the wishes of Owners, payment by Direct Debit is now available over a six month period to spread the cost of Maintenance Fees. The Direct Debit payments will be collected from January to June and the administration charge remains a mere 5%, the same as it used to be for payment by Standing Order. A copy of the Direct Debit Mandate will be included in the package with the Minutes of the 2006 AGM and in future mail-shots, but interested Owners only have to complete this form once and return it to Resort Solutions and their future years’ maintenance fees will be collected with no fuss.

We are also intending to set up all new Owners on Direct Debit payment arrangements, to make paying the annual fees as easy as possible.

Apologies for the Dust

We are sorry that our Resort is not up to its usual high standard of external cleanliness but, unfortunately, on-going construction activity to the rear of the Las Calas 3 area of the Resort is causing a fine film of dust to settle on our apartment balconies. Our Housekeeping Team are doing everything they can to alleviate this problem but ask that you bear with us, as this is beyond our control.
