Club Las Calas AGM 2012 - Election News

After a great deal of soul-searching, Mike Campbell Rickets has announced that he will not now be standing for re-election to the Committee of Club Las Calas in 2012. He has taken this decision in order to be able devote more time to his role as Chief Executive of the Laneside Trust (see www.lanesidetrust.org.uk). He will nonetheless serve out his full term on the Committee and will formally retire at the 2012 AGM.


Members should note that, although Mike will not now be offering himself for election, this will not otherwise impact this year's elections at the AGM.  There will be two posts on offer: Las Calas 1 and Las Calas 3. To avoid possible confusion over the allocation of votes, Candidates may only offer themselves for ONE of these 'constituancies'.

Any Member intending to stand for election to one or other post should forward the necessary paperwork (in accordance with the Club's Constitution) to reach Resort Solutions Limited no later than 14:00 on Monday 12 March 2012.  The nomination papers should clearly state which of the two posts the candidate wishes to contest and should also demonstrate that he or she is fully qualified (by Ownership) to stand, in accordance with the Club's Constitution.

 

Club Las Calas & Resort Solutions Limited Enter Alliance with Club Leisure Group

The Committee of Club Las Calas has today announced that, under an umbrella agreement provided by the Club’s management company – Resort Solutions Limited – and with the latter’s full support, it has entered into a strategic partnership with Club Leisure Group to promote and sell the latter’s Spice leisure product, both on-site at the Club’s resort in Lanzarote and via off-site marketing and sales activities.

Club Las Calas Chairman Adam Johnson said that he and his fellow Committee Members were delighted to enter into this partnership with Club Leisure Group.  They felt that Spice represented a new and exciting future for holiday ownership, which perfectly complemented the outstanding service, quality and value for money that Club Las Calas already offers its Members and other guests.  Adam emphasised that they had chosen to go forward with Club Leisure Group because of the latter’s professional and dynamic approach and clear track record of success.


Linda Freer, Managing Director of Resort Solutions Limited, who had facilitated this arrangement, was equally thrilled and saw the alliance as a key element in securing a successful future for one of Resort Solutions Limited’s major client Clubs.

Speaking on behalf of Club Leisure Group, Chairman Stuart Lamont expressed his pleasure at seeing Spice established at such a prestigious European resort.  He was especially pleased to be working with Club Las Calas and Resort Solutions Limited, who, he believed, represented everything that was good about timeshare ownership in Europe.

Refurbishment of the Las Calas 2 Bar/Restaurant

Over the weekend of 19-20 August, the Club Las Calas Committee & Management held five meetings at Market Harborough.  Two of the early meetings involved the Buildings & Works Working Group, which reviewed the lessons from the revamp of the Las Calas 3 bar and plans for the bar refurbishment in Las Calas 2.  The B&WWG reported to the full Committee on Saturday afternoon.  For a variety of reasons, not least the wish – in the current difficult economic climate – to ensure that funding is fully in place before embarking on the work, the B&WWG recommended that the refurbishment of the Las Calas 2 bar should be postponed until May/June 2012.  After very careful consideration, the full Committee endorsed this proposal and planning is now proceeding on that basis.

We realise that Members (and the staff of The Welcome Inn) will be disappointed by the delay but would suggest that it is far better for this major upgrade to proceed on a sound financial basis.  Nonetheless, we must apologise that this enforced change will once again affect Owners and guests who will be at the Resort in the May/June period.  However, every effort will be made to minimise the impact.  We will keep Members and other guests informed as our plans mature.  The full proposals will be published following the Committee's Annual Site Visit in October/November 2011.

UK Borders Agency Warns of Delays for Inbound Passengers at UK Airports on Thursday 30 June 2011

The UK Borders Agency has just announced that, as the result of the planned strike tomorrow by Civil Servants in UK, there are likely to be significant delays at passport control for air passengers entering the UK on Thursday 30 June 2011.  They are advising people not to fly into UK on Thursday, if possible, although that is probably not an option for the majority of Club Las Calas guests due to return home tomorrow.

UKBA have said that the flights themselves ought not to be affected and that passengers should hopefully get into terminal buildings as quickly as usual.  However, once passengers reach their respective Immigration Control desks, they may find long queues and hence experience significant delays.  UKBA said that the length of any inbound delays will depend on the location (i.e. that some airports may be more affected than others).

That said, UKBA do not expect there to be any delays for outbound travellers.

Opening of 361 a Tremendous Success - See the Pictures Below

On Saturday 25 June, over 250 Owners, other guests and staff attended the 361 opening celebration, which was a tremendous success.  Over wine and canapes, they were able to view the wonderful new facilities and meet the new staff, led by Sarah Eden.  So many were 'knocked out' by the quality of this new facility that dinner on Saturday evening was fully booked, with the rest of the week looking just as busy.  All those lucky enough to get a place in the restaurant that evening will testify to the fantsatic food and excellent service provided by Sarah and her team.  It was a fantastic opening night.  Well done to all of them!

Good News for Club Las Calas Guests - Charge for Extra Nights Reduced to €40 per Night

As announced to Members at the Club Las Calas AGM last Sunday, the charge for extra nights of accommodation at Club Las Calas has been reduced to €40 per night, a reduction of 50%.  Such extra nights are offered - subject to availability and a limit of three (3) consecutive nights at any one time - to guests who arrive in and/or depart from Lanzarote on days other than Thursday, the Resort change-over day.  It is hoped that this will enable guests to take advantage of cheaper air fares that are sometimes available on other days of the week.

The Club Las Calas 2011 AGM took place yesterday (Sunday 5 June) at The Kettering Park Hotel in Northamptonshire.  All of the business of the AGM was completed within the allotted three hours.  The Club's 2010 Accounts were overwhelmingly approved by Members and Mike West was elected to the Committee place being vacated by Joan Lambton (see below).  Further details of the AGM are available in Members' Hot News in the Members Only area of the website.

Club Las Calas AGM 2011 - Joan Lambton Retires After 14 Years on the Committee

Committee Member Joan Lambton, who had served on the Club Las Calas Committee for 14 years, stood down at the 2011 AGM, which was held at The Kettering Park Hotel on Sunday 6 June.    Her place on the Committee has been taken by Mike West (see above).

To mark the occasion, opportunity was taken for a brief celebration at the Committee Meeting on the day before the AGM, with a glass of champagne and a specially-commissioned cake.

Meanwhile, to show their appreciation for her many years of dedicated service to the Club, Members presented Joan with the gift of a teak sun-lounger for the garden of her new home in North Yorkshire.  Thank you Joan and may you have a long and relaxing 'retirement'.

Upgrading El Rincon

As previously announced, El Rincon - the continental bistro bar in the Las Calas 3 area of the Resort - is closed from today [28 April 2011] until Friday 24 June 2011 (inclusive), while it undergoes a major refurbishment.   This renovation programme will see upgrades to furnishings and decor, a significant increase in capacity and the introduction of a new cocktail bar.  While the work is in progress, special arrangements are in place to ensure that the closure of El Rincon does not affect our guests' holidays.  The Las Calas 3 pool will remain in full use throughout the upgrade work, although some guests will be relocated to Apartments away from the work.  Meanwhile, our other on-site bar/restaurant - The Welcome Inn - will be open longer, with additional staff on duty, to ensure that guests who wish are able to eat and drink on site.

Finally, for those planning to visit Club Las Calas in late June this year, there will be a party on site on Saturday 25 June 2011, to celebrate the reopening of El Rincon.  All guests on site at that time will be invited.

Club Las Calas is delighted to report that earlier hard work on the part of Rachel Littleworth (Resort Manager) and Julie Leonard (Customer Care Representative) has been recognised in the form of two retrospective individual awards.  RCI has presented Rachel Littleworth with the 2009 RCI Award for Developer Achievement [RADA] Award for Sales Manager of the Year, while Julie Leonard received the 2009 RADA Sales Representative of the Year Award.  The Committee would like to extend its hearty congratulations to both Rachel and Julie.

New Faces at El Rincon

At the end of 2010, after ten successful, fun-filled years of running El Rincon, Kirsty & Phil reluctantly decided to move on.  Phil had been offered a wonderful opportunity in a new, Lanzarote-based restaurant, while Kirsty was planning to take a short break to re-charge her batteries, before resuming her career.  The Committee feels sure that all Members and guests at Club Las Calas will join in thanking Phil & Kirsty for all they have done over the years and to wish them both every success in the future.

The new Bar Manager at El Rincon is Sarah Eden, who took over at the start of December 2010.  Sarah has considerable experience, is very enthusiastic about her new role and looks forward to greeting friends old and new over the coming months.

In the kitchen at El Rincon, Paul Campbell has assumed the duties of Head Chef and, since 5 January 2011, has been wowing clients with his exciting take on bistro cuisine.  He has introduced a number of new dishes and 'specials' and feels sure that he will be able to offer something to tickle the palate of all El Rincon clients when they visit.

Plans in Place to Refurbish El Rincon in May 2011

The Committee and Management of Club Las Calas have for some time been seeking a way to give both of our on-site bar/restaurants a major face-lift.  To that end, in June 2010, we formed a ‘Buildings & Works Working Group’ [B&WWG], to investigate, design and cost major refits for both outlets.  Having carefully examined the plans and business case presented by the B&WWG, we have decided to refurbish our continental bistro – El Rincon – in May/June 2011.  Thereafter, we will upgrade our on-site pub – The Welcome Inn –as soon as we have the necessary funding in place, which, on current plans, will be in the first quarter of 2012.  The plans for El Rincon include a larger bar, a dedicated ‘sitting out’ area with sofas and armchairs and a significant increase in indoor seating capacity.  The latter will be achieved by fully enclosing (in aluminium and glass) the entire area covered by the existing canopy and removing most of the front exterior brick wall of the present building.  This will enable the entire seating area to be configured as a single large entity; open at the front in summer, closed in winter.  An equally stunning make-over is planned for The Welcome Inn.

This is a warning for all Warning to all Drivers!  Stand by for Fun and Games in Puerto del Carmen on 19/20 July 2010

This is a warning for all Club Las Calas Owners and other guests who are in the habit of hiring cars, motorcycles, scooters or cycles whilst on holiday in Lanzarote.  We have just received notification from the Ayuntamiento de Tias (i.e. Tias town council) that, overnight on 19/20 July 2010, the direction of the one-way traffic on La Avenida de las Playas (commonly know as 'The Strip') will be reversed.  At present, the flow is north eastwards (i.e. from the Old Town towards the airport).  From 20 July onwards, the traffic will flow the other way (i.e. south-westwards, from the airport towards the Old Town).

Not unexpectedly, this change will have a knock-on effect, not only on many of the side roads that lead off the strip but also much wider afield.  The traffic direction will be reversed in a number of streets, including Calle Cañada (Calle Cesar Manrique) and Calle Princesa Guayarmina.

The exact timing of the change has yet to be confirmed.  Originally, it was to have taken place at midnight on 19/20 July but it is likely that the roads will now not be opened until 07:30 on 20 July 2010.  However, the picture is further complicated by the fact that La Avenida de las Playas will be closed on Saturday 17 July 2010, for the Lanzarote Gay Pride March, and is likely to remain closed following that event until after the changes in traffic flow have been implemented.

Motorists (and pedestrians) are advised to exercise extreme caution in the period immediately following the change.

Margaret Stenson Re-Joins the Club Las Calas Customer Care Team

Club Las Calas is delighted to announce that Margaret Stenson has re-joined the Customer Care Team on site.

Margaret previously worked at the Resort in 2003 - 2004 and will be familiar to many Owners and other guests.  After leaving Club Las Calas in November 2004, she went to work as a Contracts Administrator for Sunterra, which later became Diamond Resorts International.  In November 2009, Margaret was made redundant, when all the work of the Contracts Department was centralised in the UK but, having taken the opportunity to catch up with some overdue decorating, she is now very excited to be given the opportunity to work at Club Las Calas again, alongside Ann and Julie, and she looks forward to renewing acquaintances with old friend on site.

Club Las Calas Owners' Meetings - 2010

In the past month, Members of Club Las Calas have gathered together in Edinburgh in Scotland, Oslo in Norway and Market Harborough in England, as part of the annual round of Owners' Meetings for 2010.

Over 60 Members were present at the Edinburgh Capital Hotel on Saturday 22 May 2010 for the Scottish Information Meeting, which was led by the Club Chairman, Adam Johnson.  Over 40 Members attended the Norwegian Information Meeting at Handverkeren Conferensesenter in Oslo on Sunday 30 May 2010, for a presentation and discussion led by Committee Member Rainer Karlstad.

Finally, on Sunday 6 June 2010, over 60 Members, family and friends were in attendance at The Three Swans Hotel in Market Harborough for the Club's Annual General Meeing, which was preceded by a most enjoyable luncheon.

 

ANNOUNCEMENT - 8 JUNE 2010

It is with great sadness that Club Las Calas must report the untimely death of Allan Hill, long-serving and well-liked barman at El Rincon and friend of many Club Members and other guests at the Resort.  Allan died suddenly last week at home in England, whilst visiting the UK to celebrate his father's birthday.

The Chairman, Committee and Management of Club Las Calas would wish to join his colleagues at El Rincon and all of the other staff at the Resort and at Resort Solutions Limited in extending our sincere condolences to his wife Angie, his family and friends.

 

 

Free Resort-wide Wi-Fi Now Operational at Club Las Calas

Club Las Calas is delighted to announce that Wi-Fi is now available throughout the Resort and - what is more - it is free of charge!   It is ideal for those of you who want to keep in touch with friends and family - to tell them what a wonderful time you are having - or if you need to follow the market or retain a link with the office (yes, even on holiday!) and we mustn't forget the youngsters and their games.  All you need to do is bring your laptop, obtain the current password from Reception and log on.  For security reasons, the password will be changed at least fortnightly.

With the new 18-hole Tias Golf Course now fully open less than a mile from the Resort, Members and other guests will be delighted to hear that our Resort Manager, Rachel, now has five sets of golf clubs, including one left handed set, which may be rented out from Reception at 10 Euros a round.  So, now, you can enjoy your golf in the sun (at special Club Las Calas discounted rates) without having to pay to fly your own clubs out to Lanzarote.

May we offer a big thank you to everyone who has kindly donated a set.  However, if there is anyone out there with a lady's set that they would be willing to donate, please let Rachel know and we will reimburse the cost of flying the golf clubs to Lanzarote.

As visitors to Club Las Calas may already know, two major providers of flights to and from Lanzarote - First Choice Airways and Thomsonfly - have recently joined forces.  Henceforward, the combined operation - known as Thomson Airways - should be able to offer more choice, more destinations, more regular flights and more UK departure airports.  Indeed, this amalgamation now makes Thomson Airways the biggest UK tour operator at most UK regional airports.  Importantly, all Thomson Airways one way and return flights will be ATOL protected.

Preceeded by a well-attended buffet luncheon, the 2009 Club Las Calas Annual General Meeting was held at The Three Swans Hotel, Market Harborough on Sunday 7 June 2009.  There were 83 Club Members in attendance.

A video of the Meeting will be available on the Members' Pages of the website shortly and full details of the Meeting will be provided in the AGM Minutes, which will be circulated to all Members in due course.  However, in the interim, the results of the voting on the three Resolutions put forward at the AGM are available on the Members' News page in the Members' Section of the website.

Infrastructure Developments in Puerto Del Carmen

Those of us who are regular visitors to Club Las Calas will be aware that the Tias Ayuntamiento (the District Council) has recently begun a major series of public works to upgrade the Avenida Las Playas in Puerto Del Carmen (a.k.a. 'The Strip').  This programme embraces improvements to drainage, changes to vehicular access and the creation of pedestrian areas and traffic-free zones.  It also includes the imposition of new standards for the external appearance of shops and businesses, designed to improve the overall ambiance of the area.  These developments are in parallel to improvements in the road infrastucture around Puerto Del Carmen, which will see the existing circunvalacion (the ring-road) replaced by a new dual carriageway.

As an introduction to these significant developments, the Ayuntamiento has produced a short video, entitled 'The Way Ahead' (Rumbo al Futuro).  The commentary is in Spanish but the excellent photography and graphics are self-explanatory and the video gives a real flavour of the proposed improvements.

Club Las Calas is delighted to announce that, in a combined ballot of Management, staff and guests on site, Divina Carollo Meis has been selected as Club Las Calas Employee of the Year 2008.

Divina is one of our long-serving and hard-working maids, who has won the award for her pleasant manner and the excellent service that she provides to our guests.

In early June 2009, together with Karen Kell, the 2007 Employee of the Year, she will travel to the UK for a weekend break in London - paid for by the Club - before joining Club Members for lunch at the 2009 Annual General Meeting in Market Harborough.

Tee Off at Club Las Calas - New Lanzarote Golf Course Offers Discount for Club Las Calas Guests

We have good news for all golfers looking for the chance to play in the Lanzarote sunshine!  A new 18 hole golf course - Lanzarote's second - has opened within half a mile (1 km) of Club Las Calas and, even better, the new course is offering Club Las Calas guests a 20% discount on green fees.

Successful 2008 Club Las Calas AGM

A very successful Club Las Calas Annual General Meeting took place at The Three Swans Hotel, Market Harborough, on Sunday, 1 June 2008, with Owners representing over 600 Weeks either attending in person or voting by post or proxy.  The Club's Audited 2007 Accounts were approved unanimously, as was the re-election to the Committee of Graham Findlay, to serve a further term of five years.

Next year's AGM will take place at The Three Swans Hotel, Market Harborough, on Sunday, 7 June 2009.  Following a straw poll of the Owners at this year's Meeting, it has also been decided that the 2009 Meeting will be preceded by a buffet luncheon for all those Members and their families who wish to attend.  The cost will be approximately £10 per head.  Further details will be promulgated in due course.

One further decision announced at this year's AGM is that a Club Las Calas Scottish Information Meeting will be held in 2009.  Further details will be promulgated with the Minutes of the 2008 Annual General Meeting.

 

Improved Half-Board Deal Available at Club Las Calas

For a modest charge, the Half-Board package at Club Las Calas offers guests breakfast and dinner at either of the restaurants on site for the duration of their stay.  Ever since it was introduced, has been very popular but now, responding to guests' comments, it has been made even better and includes tea or coffee (for adults) as part of the breakfast meal.

The cost for adults is only €75 per person per week, while children are charged just €45 per person per week.

Club Las Calas is delighted to announce that, in a combined ballot of Management, staff and guests on site, Karen Kell of the Welcome Inn has been selected as Club Las Calas 2007 Employee of the Year.

Unfortunately, this year, Karen is unable to take up her prize of an expenses-paid trip for two to London and the Annual General Meeting, because she will be on holiday in Mexico.  However, she promises she will join the Members at the AGM next year, along with the Winner of the 2008 Employee of the Year Award.

Club Las Calas Appoints New Customer Care & Sales Manager

Club Las Calas is pleased to announce that Ron Reeve has today assumed the role of Customer Care & Sales Manager at the Resort, reporting directly to Rachel Littleworth, our Resort Manager.  Formerly In-House Manager at Airtours Beach Club in Gran Canaria, Ron has a wealth of customer care and sales experience in the holiday industry in Spain and the Canary Islands.  Ron joins long-standing team member Ann Dennett and will oversee the expansion of our Customer Care & Sales organisation, as part of a strategic drive to improve service and boost membership at Club Las Calas.
